About Fuyuan National Nature Reserve

Situated in Heilongjiang Province near the confluence of the Ussuri and Amur Rivers, Fuyuan National Nature Reserve covers a vast expanse of temperate wetland and forest ecosystems. Established to protect the unique biodiversity of the region, the reserve plays a crucial role in preserving habitat for the endangered Amur tiger and Far Eastern leopard, as well as numerous migratory bird species including the red-crowned crane. The lower Amur river basin surrounding the reserve is noted for its rich floodplain wetlands, riverside forests, and peat bogs, creating a mosaic of habitats supporting a diverse array of plants, fish, and wildlife. The reserve’s temperate climate features cold winters and warm, humid summers, nurturing a mix of boreal and temperate species. Visitors are drawn to Fuyuan for its opportunities in birdwatching, wildlife photography, and experiencing tranquil riverscapes. The reserve contains boardwalks and designated paths enabling observation of fragile wetland environments without disturbance. Historically, Fuyuan’s remote location has limited heavy development, helping maintain its ecological integrity. International cooperation efforts have been significant in addressing conservation challenges, especially regarding wildlife corridors and poaching prevention. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy guided tours focused on spotting elusive tigers or migratory birds while learning about the delicate balance of this unique reserve in the Russian-Chinese border region.
